In commemoration of Menstrual Hygiene Day (MHDay) 2024, the Sustainable Menstrual Pads Initiative (SuS Pads), Fowgi, and Hope Spring Water collaborated to host a groundbreaking menstrual hygiene training and workshop. The event aimed to promote menstrual hygiene, sustainability, and inclusivity among young girls and boys in Nigeria.
Empowering Girls with Menstrual Hygiene Knowledge
The workshop was an interactive session where girls and boys were taught about menstruation, its normal duration, and when to seek medical attention. Girls were also instructed on how to calculate their menstrual cycle, practise proper menstrual hygiene, and maintain a clean environment. The importance of a balanced diet during menstruation, regular exercise, and rest were also emphasised.

Introducing Reusable Menstrual Pads
To address the issue of period poverty and promote sustainability, the workshop introduced reusable pads as a viable alternative to disposable pads. Research has shown that disposable pads contribute to landfill waste and take years to decompose. In contrast, reusable pads are cost-effective, durable, and can last 3-5 years if properly maintained.
Hands-on Training and Confidence Boost
The girls received hands-on training on how to cut and sew their reusable pads. They were thrilled to learn this new skill, which has empowered them to manage their periods effectively. According to Patience Amos Musa, a JSS 2 student, “I am happy that I can make my pads by myself now because I always used rags before. With this reusable pad training, I can now manage my period well.”
Encouraging Confidence and inclusivity
Bolu Olorunfemi, SuS Pads’ founder, emphasised the importance of confidence and self-acceptance during menstruation. She encouraged the girls to be proud of their bodies and not allow anyone to shame them because of their period. The initiative also involved boys in the menstrual conversation, aiming to create a more inclusive and supportive community.

Outcomes and Next Steps
The MHDay2024 reusable Pad making workshop and menstrual hygiene training was a resounding success. The girls received menstrual kit bags and pads, which will help them maintain their menstrual hygiene during their next period. The initiative is now seeking partnerships and sponsorships to continue its mission of promoting menstrual hygiene, sustainability, and inclusivity.
